In 2019 I wAS COMMISSIONED BY DENTSU FOR THE OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER OF JAPAN TO MAKE THREE VIDEOS ABOUT THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF NIKKEI, PEOPLE OF JAPANESE DESCENT, IN SOUTH AMERICA. WE TRAVELLED TO BRAZIL, ARGENTINA, PERU AS WELL AS THE BRAZILIAN EMBASSY IN TOKYO, THE NIKKEI MUSUEM IN YOKOHAMA AND TOYAMA PREFECTURE WHERE WE MET YOUNG NIKKEI SOUTH AMERICANS WHO HAD TRAVELLED TO JAPAN TO DISCOVER THEIR JAPANESE ROOTS.
For this series we conducted 12 interviews in Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. The families and professionals that we met welcomed us into their homes and businesses, giving us access to the family photos and records brought to life their Personal histories.
For the video about the history of Japanese emigration to South America We collaborated with Brazilian-Japanese model Emi Renata who presented the video, telling the story of both her family and the millions of Japanese who moved to South America over 100 years ago.
